From pro-snowboarder to Waymo Engineer

Our team at Waymo comes from all over the world and brings a diverse set of experiences to the work of creating fully self-driving cars. Our teammate, Andrew Crawford, is no exception. After a ten-year career as a pro-snowboarder (and after 35 broken bones in search of the perfect powder), Andrew decided, at the age of 31, to go back to school to tackle his next dream: becoming an engineer.

Having been out of school for almost a decade, engineering didn’t come easy. Andrew had to re-learn the most basic of math skills and almost gave up multiple times. But just as he devoted countless hours to achieve his dream of participating in the X Games, he relied on the same determination to graduate, land internships at NASA and become a systems engineer at Waymo.

At TEDxBigSky, Andrew discusses how the concept of “escape velocity” helped him test his own limits.

We’re growing at Waymo and looking for team members who share Andrew’s passion and dedication for building technology that will save lives and makes our roads safer. Visit our careers page to find out how you can join our team.
