Opportunities for All @ Waymo
Unfortunately, too many of our young people are being left behind because they do not have the skills, education, and exposure at an early age to career opportunities that can transform their lives.
San Francisco Mayor Breed created Opportunities for All in 2018 to address this inequality and ensure more young people can be a part of San Francisco’s thriving economy, including the autonomous vehicle industry. Mayor London Breed attributes her own internship experience with the City of San Francisco as being essential to her success.
This week, we teamed up with Opportunities for All to welcome 25 students ages 14–24 to our Mountain View office where we had the chance to tell them more about Waymo, and the job skills and career paths to join the AV sector. Aside from touring our headquarters and checking out our cars, the students were introduced to a variety of career paths across engineering, business, operations, and recruiting.
Waymo’s Sydnee Journel, the event organizer, said, “I also grew up in this community. I’ve seen the changes that have happened in the last few decades. I know how the area has changed with the rise of tech. To be a part of that and introduce Waymo to the neighborhoods where I grew up and that raised me means a lot to me.”
Two of our attendees shared about their experience:
“Today was great. A lot of kids from the City (SF) don’t know about self driving cars, and it’s cool we’re the first to know about them.”
“This has been great! I’ve never visited a tech company before, and I plan on majoring in Engineering”
At Waymo, we aim to bring fully self-driving technology to the world that can improve mobility by giving people the freedom to get around, in all meanings of the word.
